Starfield's Planets are Intentionally Barren

“When the astronauts went to the moon, there was nothing there' but 'they certainly weren't bored”
by Joe Wilcock on September 05, 2023

Bethesda's latest offering, Starfield, aspires to capture the enormity and wonder of space exploration. The game's ambition lies in its promise of a vast, procedurally generated universe, with over 1000 planets waiting to be discovered. Bethesda's managing director, Ashley Cheng, asserts that the sheer scale of the game is intended to evoke a sense of insignificance and wonder, echoing the sentiment that space should feel overwhelming.

Cheng argues that not every celestial body in Starfield is meant to be a thrilling adventure; some are intentionally barren, mirroring the reality of space. He draws parallels to the moon landings, emphasizing that the astronauts found little excitement in the lunar landscape. Instead, the thrill is supposed to arise from the novelty of exploration itself.

"The point of the vastness of space is you should feel small. It should feel overwhelming. When the astronauts went to the moon, there was nothing there. They certainly weren't bored”

- Ashley Cheng, Bethesda Managing Director

Todd Howard, the legendary figure behind Bethesda's creations, reinforces this perspective. He highlights the human curiosity to venture into the unknown and states that Starfield's vastness is essential to convey that feeling of exploration.

However, early players of Starfield have raised questions about whether the game truly delivers on its grand vision. Some have reported that the planets they've explored so far feel less uncharted and more like isolated regions from other Bethesda titles. Critics argue that the sense of wonder and isolation is yet to be fully realized, and the game's planets lack the expected desolation.

The ambition of presenting a sprawling cosmos is clear, but whether it can truly capture the essence of venturing into the vast unknown without succumbing to repetitiveness is a question players are eager to see answered as they continue to explore its expansive universe.
